Total Solar Eclipse, July 11, 1991 © John Ballard, PhD. 2017
Red Hill What is it like to experience a total eclipse of the sun? To see the moon move across the disc of the sun? To stand in the shadow of the moon? Is it worth traveling hundreds, even thousands of miles, for just a few minutes when the moon totally blocks the sun? In 1991 we traveled over 4000 miles to the Big Island of Hawaii to view a total solar eclipse. On July 11 the shadow of the moon would sweep across the Big Island. We wanted to see the eclipse from high on Mauna Loa, the largest volcano on Earth, hopefully above any clouds that might threaten viewing. Richard was a novice to backpacking and camping and yet he set out with John into a volcanic wilderness in search of an experience. On the webpages before this one, we have shared events leading up to our trek. The Kindle story begins after midnight on July 8, 1991. It is the story of Richard’s Mauna Loa adventure and his encounter with an event far beyond his expectations, an experience almost beyond his ability to comprehend. |
